Tony got out and tilled the garden one more time and then set up all of our rows for the Spring crop.

We took a trip to Plant and See and bought the seeds and seedlings for our Spring crop. We purchased a good portion of this year's crop for $35.61. Here's the breakdown of what we got today:

Early Jersey Cabbage - 48 seedlings - $9.90
Packman Broccoli - 40 seedlings - $11.88
Yukon Gold Potatoes - 5 lbs. - $2.50
Pontiac Red Potatoes - 9 lbs. - $4.50
Yellow Onions - - $1.50
Imperator Carrots - 1/2 oz. - $1.25
Dark Green Bloomsdale Spinach - 1 oz. - $1.75

We did not have very many freezes this winter, but we did get a light snow Feb. 16th, 2013. We had, what will more than likely be, one of our last freezes of the winter last week. We are determined to have a very successful crop this year and keep the bugs from destroying our produce. We will also be investing in floating row covers and netting for some of our fruits and vegetables within the next few weeks to see if it will maximize our return this year. Overall, we should definitely be able to get our money's worth!

Got out and tilled the garden up on February 2nd, 2013 to get prepared for planting the Spring crop.

Hoping to get off to a good start this year. I generally put my plants in later than I like. I hope to kick off this planting season on time and before the bugs get out and hungry. Cabbage worm, I will beat you this year.
I'll take it. I know you have all been on the edge of your seats, dying to know what is happening at the Frugal Farm. Over the past two weeks, it has just been growing. I have pulled a couple of big hauls of spinach, and we have begun the blanch and freeze phase I of this frugal expedition.
I know everyone has just been dying to know what has been going on at the Dunn Plantation over the last couple weeks! Well, things are looking good. We saw signs of the cabbage worms back on attack so we have put out more dipel dust to eliminate this pesky creature. We are still getting TONS of spinach and lettuce. Yesterday, we harvested about 5-6 pounds of spinach and a pound of lettuce. We filled two gallon bags (packed extremely tight) of spinach and one gallon bag of lettuce. That's about $24.00 in spinach and $8.00 in lettuce! The spinach looks as if it might be slowing down, but there is still more to be harvested! The strawberry bushes are getting tiny green strawberries and the broccoli plants are starting to form heads. All and all, things are looking great!

We are off to a later start than usual, but the summer crop has been planted. Right after buying our seedlings we had two rainy days and then two nights with really cold weather. I guess we got lucky that our plants did not go in before that last scare of frost! Here's what we planted on April 25th, 2012:

We have about $80.00 invested in the garden so far this year. We needed to purchase a new, reliable sprinkler and also decided to splurge for a timer for the sprinkler this year. This cost about $55.00 out of the $80.00 invested, which is very reasonable since the sprinkler and timer are a long-term investment. We are planning to record all purchases and the value of all of the produce harvested from the garden this year to see exactly how frugal we are!

Spinach was the first plant to reach maturity and ready for harvest. We pulled three colanders of spinach from the garden this week alone. Frugal Farmer straight farms.....

We are a month and three days in and getting some good growth. We have been putting dipel dust down like crazy to try and ward off cabbage worms. If you have never used dipel dust we strongly recommend it for cabbage, broccoli, and brussel sprouts. Dipel dust should be a staple in every gardeners storage shed!

Clearly I'm not cut out to be a professional blogger. I had wanted to update weekly, but have fallen behind for various reasons. One reason though was an insane amount of yard work this past weekend. I think me and Miranda did near nine hours straight on Sunday. Dreams of a TV yard. Funds of a yard sale yard.

We have been getting killed by the cabbage looper for nearly two weeks. I have been trying to get a moment to put the Dipel Dust down, but it has been a bit too rainy. As you can see, the cabbage worm hit us pretty hard.

Eleven days ago (3/26), I dusted the plants with the Dipel Dust. It worked wonders. As you can see these plants were a cabbage looper clan's buffet. Things are looking much better.

We have had a remarkably warm winter and spring this year. We have had several days in the 80s and weeks of consistent sunny and 70s. A day after dusting, we got a frost scare. It did not turn out as frosty as the weathermen suggested. But we had to prepare. I did a last minute cover job. I covered the strawberries with a large sheet of plastic and the potatoes, unnecessarily, with a makeshift combination of Tupperware, sand toys, and a wheel-barrel. It didn't frost really. Better safe than sorry though.

We put down our first round of 10-10-10 this past week. We have had some pretty heavy rains over the past two days, which should set the fertilizer off. Today, we got out there and ran the big tiller and the Mantis down the rows. We weeded each row thoroughly. Things are looking good so far. I am waiting for the rain to move out to put down the dipel dust for the cabbage worms.
I waged worm genocide today. Leaf by leaf, I sifted through 40 cabbage, 24 brussel sprout, and 16 broccoli plants crushing every cabbage worm possible. I'm sure a few escaped my wrath, but I was the stronger species today. They may be a more persistent being, but I have technology on my side. It is supposed to rain today and tomorrow, but once that has passed, I will unleash the chemical phase of my genocidal campaign. Dipel dust will eradicate these succubi. Well I was going for succubises (suck-u-bis-es), but I like succubi:
So I've been holding back on the pics to try and make this a more
step-by-step process. I should just let it fly and get the stuff up
here. We got all of this stuff in on leap day, February 29th, 2012. We planted 40
cabbage, 24 brussel spouts, 16 broccoli, 12 strawberry (4 I planted
today), 3/4 row of spinach, and 1/4 row of lettuce. I mentioned the
carrots, onions, and potatoes in my last post, I hope. 25 potato
plants, 1/2 pd. onions, oz of carrot seed.

All the rows have been cut, mounds have been built, and the early crops have been planted.
We have gone with several wide rows (18in) to try to maximize the amount
of crops that can be planted. We did this on the rows that hold
cabbage, carrots, onions, and beans.
The indention in the two above pics is a trick I picked up on the net from this hippie, organic gardener. I took an old handle to a shovel or some tool from years ago and pushed it down into the soil, making a trench to sow the seeds. Then you just cover them up. Done in a jiffy.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02385060542310339959noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6152063749971334481.post-32308982863911392312012-02-27T09:09:00.003-08:002012-02-27T09:10:12.313-08:00Greenhouse for Seed PropogationI'm so building one of these. We set out to cut out some rows, plant potatoes and onions, and hit Plant and See nursery to get our early crops. Instead, we cut the underground fence line trying to expand our garden a couple of feet. After a quick fix patch job, we cut out a couple of big rows (18 in. wide) and planted potatoes. We were slowed down by trying to pick a ton of grassroots out, hoping to head off the attack that is coming a little bit. The eleven month old, who either wants to eat dirt, pick up dog poop, or just be annoyed that she can't do whatever she wants didn't speed things up.
We did formulate our plan of attack and plant about 25 potato plants. Hoping to get our onions cabbage, broccoli, carrots, spinach, brussel sprouts, and spinach in tomorrow. I would like more than anything to be able to say authoritatively that "I am your Frugal Farmer. And this is the Frugal Garden on a Hill." A little Darth Vedar meets John Winthrop.
In reality I'm not a frugal gardener, just a cheap one. I am not a Jedi gardener and my garden is a far cry from that "Garden on a Hill." More accurately, I'm a Padawan gardener and my plot is more like the Fraggle Rock of gardens. I do want to be a frugal gardener though.

My wife and I started our garden two years ago as a hobby. We had hoped to add more fresh fruits and vegetables to our diet at a low cost. Turns out, gardening is too much work to be considered a hobby, and when you do treat it as a hobby, you just end up dumping a lot of money into it. Well with the current state of our economy (ahh moan & cry, I'm cheap and poor), gas at $3.81 a gallon, and milk a $4.25 a gallon, I can't afford to treat gardening as a hobby. I need it to be economical. I need to be frugal and it to be productive. So I have started this blog to see if this year brings me one year closer to being able to say "I am your Frugal Gardner. And this is the Frugal Garden on a Hill." My goal this year is to put as little money into my garden as I can and harvest, preserve, and use from it as much as I can this year.

Here are a few goals that I would like to meet this season. (I'll more than likely be revising these notably as the year progresses and the heat and humidity rises.)

Harvest enough to clearly demonstrate the economy of having garden

Preserve and store as much produce as possible (freezing & pickling)

Creatively integrate fresh produce into the family diet

Keep operating costs low

Get Compost System Up and Running

Test soil finally so I can properly amend it in the coming years

Add a rain barrel system

We would like to go a season were we get production from everything we plant. (We have had some problems with tomatoes (blossom end rot), bell peppers have never really produced and have had problems with cross pollination, and we get hammered by the squash bug.)

Plant a fall crop!

Next year work to raise my own seedlings.

Maybe even sell or barter a little produce at the farmers' market

I've already had some wins and losses. I did not attempt to raise seedlings this year. I can't figure out if this is in or out of line with my "frugal gardening." I would have to do this inside, which would require buying grow lights. So that would be some investment. We tried doing this our first year, and we did let the seedlings get as established as they needed to be, had problems with the little cups that we used, and we ended up losing a lot of plants and time (because we didn't really know what we were doing) and having to buy seedlings anyway. So this year we have opted to buy seedlings for many plants and sow seed whenever we can. Ideologically in or out of line, still to be determined.

I have had some minor wins. Historically, we never get the garden going as early as I would like. I have tilled the garden twice now and it is ready to have the rows cut out and the early crops go in. We hoped to have done this today, but we had some violent storms for the last 24 hours. We will see how the soil looks tomorrow, but it may have to wait until Monday. I also got a new compost system set up. This is definitely in line with our "frugal" goals. I built it at no cost. Its effectiveness also still to be determined.

So if anyone is reading ever or still. Stay tuned for some cheapo gardening.
